That one time a client said my fonts were 'too distracting' and I actually listened

I used to use all these fancy display fonts for headlines, thought it made me look creative. Last year a client literally said 'your reports look like a birthday card' and I switched to just Arial and Open Sans for everything. Has anyone else had a client's random comment totally change your whole design approach?

Switching to Arial and Open Sans was the best thing I ever did (even if it hurt my pride a little). Clients stopped complaining about the font choices and started actually paying attention to the content, which is the whole point. Sometimes less really is more, even if it feels boring at first.

@juliaa65 totally gets it. My friend drew up this whole brand package for a coffee shop, used like 4 different fancy fonts for their menu and signage. The owner looked at it and straight up said "this looks like a ransom note." My friend was crushed but switched to just 2 simple sans-serif fonts and the owner loved it. Now she does that for all her clients. Sometimes you gotta get roasted to level up.

Man, it's funny how one comment can reset your whole approach to design. It's like when I switched from using a million spices to just salt and pepper after a friend said my chili tasted like potpourri. Sometimes you gotta realize the fancy stuff is just getting in the way.
