I finally caved and paid $40 for a grammar checker app...
I thought I was fine with just spellcheck. But last month I sent a proposal to someone and they pointed out three typos... it was so embarrassing. For forty bucks a month it catches everything before I hit send. Has anyone else spent money on something small that saved you from looking dumb in front of a client?

You said it "saved you from looking dumb" but honestly I don't think a grammar checker is the fix here. People mess up typos sometimes, it happens. If a client judges you that hard over a couple mistakes they probably aren't worth working with anyway. I'd rather spend that forty bucks on something useful and just proofread my own stuff twice. Learning to catch your own errors is way better than paying an app to do it for you.

Wait why would proofreading your own stuff twice be better than having an app catch the stuff you're gonna miss anyway? Ngl I used to think the same way, thought I had a solid eye for my own typos. But after sending out a proposal where I wrote "pubic" instead of "public" I caved and got a checker. That one letter cost me a client's respect, not the money. Tbh spending forty bucks is way cheaper than losing a job over something stupid.

Jumping off what abby said - honestly its less about the app and more about building the habit of catching stuff yourself. Like yeah a grammar checker can fix "pubic" but you dont learn anything from it, you just rely on it more and more. Ive been typing proposals and emails for years now and the only way I got better was by reading my stuff out loud before sending. You catch the awkward flow and the dumb mistakes way better that way. Plus that skill carries over to everything you write, not just the stuff you run through a checker. Its like using a calculator for basic math - handy in a pinch but you should still know how to add without it.
