Just realized my 'rainy day fund' wasn't really that

I was sitting in my car outside the post office last Tuesday when my check engine light came on. Figured I'd dip into my savings like usual, but when I checked my account I only had $87 set aside. I thought I was being smart but I was just putting spare change in there. That mechanic bill was $340 and now I'm actually keeping a real emergency fund.

Have you ever noticed how so many things we call "savings" are really more like "a little leftover cash" until something real forces us to call it what it is?

Man, you're really making this sound like some deep life philosophy. It's just money left over at the end of the month, @ray_burns. Most people aren't staring at their bank balance like it's a ticking time bomb. If your car breaks down, yeah, you use that extra cash. Otherwise it's just sitting there not being anything serious. You're overthinking a pretty basic thing.
