My backup drive died on a Tuesday and I had no backup plan...

Last month my 2TB external drive just clicked once and went silent. Had six months of graphic design work on there, no cloud backup because I thought 'it's just sitting on my desk, what could happen'. Lost a whole branding project for a local coffee shop in Decatur. Contacted a data recovery place and they wanted $800 minimum. Now I'm running two separate cloud backups and a second local drive. Anyone else learn this one the hard way or am I just extra dumb about this?

Wait, $800 minimum?? That's insane for just poking at a dead drive with a screwdriver. Did they promise to throw in a steak dinner with that price?

Yeah you got that dreaded click of death, right? I've had two drives die on me same way. Now I do the 3-2-1 thing - three copies, two different types of media, one offsite. For you, Backblaze is pretty cheap for cloud backup, like 6 bucks a month. And grab a SSD for your local backup instead of a spinner, they're more reliable these days for creative work.

Lost my entire wedding photo album to a failing laptop hard drive once.
