That neighbor of yours probably went all in with soil testing and amendments (like core aeration and compost topdressing). Most people skip the soil test and just throw down fertilizer, guessing at what the lawn needs. You can buy those little soil test kits at any garden center for like $15, way cheaper than wasting money on the wrong products. Once you know your pH and nutrient levels, it's pretty easy to fix things up.

This is exactly how people treat so many things, not just lawns. Everyone wants a quick fix and skips the basics. Like you wouldn't start cooking without checking if you have the ingredients first but people do it all the time with their yard.
