Henderson's right, they drill that into you at some places. I had a barber years ago who insisted on those razor sharp lines, said it was the only "real" way to do it. But man, I've seen guys with red, bumpy skin for a week after a cut like that. Switching to a softer guard and taking the time to blend it out is just being a good barber. The client shouldn't have to toughen up if a better technique is available.
