Spent 3 weeks arguing with myself over sub or dub for Frieren and picked the wrong one
Last month I finally sat down to watch Frieren and got stuck for 3 weeks on sub vs dub, which sounds silly but I could not commit. I flipped a coin and went dub so I could fold laundry while watching, hit episode 12, and the whole meadow scene just felt flat to me. Switched back to sub the next night and it was like a different show, the little voice cracks in the quiet parts actually landed. Ended up rewatching episodes 8 through 14 in Japanese and lost a whole Saturday to it, no regrets except the lost laundry. Now I am 4 episodes behind and half tempted to just do dub for the action bits and sub for the feels. Anyone else mix and match like that or am I just making this way harder than it needs to be?
Watched dubs for years because I figured why not, it's easier on the eyes and I can do other stuff. Then I got to the later arcs of Frieren and something clicked, those quiet moments where the voice barely shakes just do not carry the same weight in English. The dub cast is fine, no knock on them, but the timing of the delivery lands different in Japanese and I finally got why people get so worked up about it. Now I keep subs on by default and only switch to dub when my eyes are tired, which is the opposite of what I used to do.
