Ran into a retired guy at the Home Depot parking lot last Tuesday
He saw me loading a broken dryer into my truck and asked what the issue was. After I told him it was a bad drum bearing, he pulled a folded diagram from his wallet showing the exact fix. Do you ever get random old-timers who just hand you gold like that?

My dad's the exact same way. He's got a whole binder of hand-drawn diagrams for everything from lawnmower carburetors to old furnace circuit boards. Last month I was complaining about a weird vibration in my washing machine and he just goes "check the shock absorbers" without even looking up from his coffee. Guys like that must have a sixth sense for trouble. Did he offer to come over and help you fix it too?

Ha, must be nice having a walking YouTube tutorial follow you around.

Wait, isn't having someone who can instantly diagnose every single problem actually a bad thing? I get that it seems helpful on the surface, but it totally kills the whole process of learning to figure stuff out on your own. Like, if your dad just tells you the answer every time, you never build the skill of actually troubleshooting a washing machine vibration or a weird hum from the furnace. Being in the loop and fixing things yourself gives you a real sense of confidence, which you completely lose if you just rely on the "family expert." Plus, it can make you feel dependent and kind of helpless when they're not around to give you the answer. Doesn't that really annoy you after a while?
