Can we talk about how much water a mature oak actually pulls from the ground in a single day?

I was reading through some old ISA research papers a buddy sent over and stumbled on a stat that blew my mind. A single mature oak can pull over 100 gallons of water from the soil in one day during peak growing season. That's more than most of us use in a shower for a whole week. It made me rethink how I approach watering plans on new plantings near established oaks. Has anyone else seen numbers like that and adjusted their setup?

Yeah that "over 100 gallons" stat really hit me too when I first saw it. I had to double check the math because it just sounds insane but it checks out with how much leaf surface those trees push. I ended up putting a 10 foot buffer zone around my oak plantings where I just let the soil dry out naturally between rains instead of running irrigation near them. Really changed how I look at competition for moisture between established canopy and new stuff.

So basically my oaks are drinking more than I do on a hot Saturday?

@brian_hart and I are just jealous our weekend booze intake doesn't hit triple digits.
