Just saw a guy try to prune a 50ft oak with a pole saw that was way too short
He was standing directly under the branch he was cutting, which is basically begging for a concussion. Why do people think their homeowner gear is fine for a tree this size?

Gotta push back a little here. I've seen plenty of weekend warriors take down huge limbs with a short pole saw and come out fine (not that I'd recommend it). Standing directly under the branch is risky for sure, but sometimes it's the only spot to get good leverage without the saw binding up on you. Most homeowner gear is actually decent for occasional work, you just have to pick your battles and know when to call a pro. That oak might be fine for a few small cuts if the branches aren't over a house or driveway.

Yeah I've been there with a live oak in my backyard, used a manual pole saw from the ground and it worked fine for the low branches that weren't too thick. As long as you're smart about where you stand and what you're cutting, it's not a death wish every time.
