Found a perfect Roman coin in the mud, then my trowel snapped
Was digging in a field near York last Thursday and my metal detector went off. Pulled out this silver denarius with a clear emperor's face, completely clean. Went to carefully scrape around it and my favorite Marshalltown trowel just broke at the handle. Had to finish the day using my backup, which is terrible. Anyone else have a tool fail at the worst possible moment?

That "perfect Roman coin" find is the dream. Total gut punch about the Marshalltown though. I had a cheap trowel bend on me right over a signal once and it's the worst feeling. At least the backup got you through the day, even if it's junk. Silver denarius makes up for a broken tool any day.

Total gut punch" is right, it feels like the hobby itself just betrayed you. My buddy's Marshalltown snapped at the hilt last fall and he just sat there staring at it. Finding that silver after a break like that must have felt like pure justice.

Isn't it wild how often the worst luck comes right before a big win? Sean48 is totally right about that silver making up for the broken tool. I swear life works like that sometimes, like it has to balance out the bad with something good. It's the same feeling when your car breaks down but then you find a twenty in your old jacket. That find must have felt amazing after the trowel snapped!
