Guy at a Tucson fossil show told me pottery shards are worthless, and I still think he's wrong
I was at the gem and mineral show in Tucson back in February and this dealer kept brushing off a box of Hohokam shards I'd brought to show around. He told me "if it ain't gold or a point, nobody cares," but those sherds had a painted rim pattern that told you more about daily life than any arrowhead ever could. Does anyone else feel like the artifact world sleeps on plain old broken pottery?
Those plain sherds are the real story, they show what people ate, how they cooked, what they traded. A painted rim can date a whole site, an arrowhead just tells you somebody shot a deer once.
