What always helps me is checking old topo maps against what's on the ground now. You can see where trails and roads used to be that trees have grown over.

Back in high school, my buddy and I checked every wooded lot in the county. I managed to trip over a log and faceplant instead of finding anything cool. My luck is just SPECIAL that way.

Ha, @rayc94, your luck isn't that special. Tripping over a log is just part of exploring (happens to everyone). It's not like you were on some serious hunt, right?
