I've been using the same 'ask anything' approach for years, but a friend in Seattle said I was doing it wrong. He thinks broad questions get ignored, and you should always start with a specific story. What's your method?

My cousin in Phoenix asked me for life advice once and I sent back a novel. He just texted "k." So now I lead with something dumb, like the time I accidentally locked my keys in the car at a dog park. People jump in to share their own key stories way faster than if I just asked "got any problems?

Totally get that, my friend once locked his keys in a running car.

I used to ask broad questions too, but a specific story really does get people talking faster.
