Update: was all set to quit my Saturday market booth after a lady in Boise said one sentence to me
I have been selling jam at the same farmers market for 14 months and honestly it has been slow, so I had already decided Saturday was my last one. Then a woman named Dana stopped at my table, bought two jars, and told me she had been coming every week just to see if I was still there. I never asked anyone this before, but has a random comment ever made you totally change a decision you were sure about?
That Dana thing hits different because she wasn't just being nice, she was showing up. Every week. Without you knowing. That's the part that gets me. We think nobody notices when we're grinding away at something small, but people do. They just don't always say it. A guy at my local bakery told me once he kept the lights on for two years waiting for one regular to come back. She finally did. So yeah, one sentence can flip everything, but only because weeks and weeks of quiet loyalty were sitting behind it.
The bakery story got me thinking about the flip side though, @jade_murray. That guy kept his lights on for a regular who showed back up, but what about the ones who never do? We only hear the happy ending. Somebody out there waited two years for someone who moved cities and never thought about that bakery again.
What really sticks with me is that the quiet loyalty went both ways and neither person knew it. She probably had no clue he was counting on her. That kind of thing is more common than we admit, we just never find out because it takes a random sentence to unlock it.
The grinders who never get their Dana moment, we never hear their story. That's the part that keeps me up sometimes.
