Heard a guy at the Atlanta Tech Village say something that stuck with me
Was grabbing coffee at Chattahoochee Coffee Company on the Westside last Thursday and overheard two guys talking about networking. One said he quit collecting business cards at events and started just asking people what they're actually working on instead. That hit me because I've been going to the same Atlanta meetups for like 3 years and half the people I met I never talked to again. Anyone else tried ditching the card swap thing and just having real talks at these events?
I went to a Tuesday night meetup at Switchyards back in January and decided to just ask one guy about the wiring job he was stressing over instead of handing him my card. We talked for 40 minutes and he ended up texting me two weeks later about a project. That never once happened in the 3 years I spent working rooms and stacking cards. The card thing feels safe but it's really just busy work, you collect a pile and nobody remembers anybody. Asking what someone is actually building or fixing gives them a reason to talk and you find out fast if you even like them. Half the people at those events are there for the same fake reason anyway, so the real talk stands out and people remember you for it.
