A stranger at the gas station said my paint job looked factory fresh, and it made me rethink how I see my own work.

We often don't see our own work clearly until someone else points it out. It's a bit backwards though. You should be able to look at a finished paint job and know it's solid without any outside input. I've met too many people who only feel good about their work after a compliment, and that's a shaky way to live.

Step away from your work for a bit, then look at it with FRESH eyes to see its true value.

Ever notice how many people need to hear "good job" just for normal stuff they do? Tbh I see it all the time, not just with big projects but like, someone will make a simple lunch and still fish for a compliment on it. It's like we're trained to need that outside check, even when we know the thing is done right. Honestly feels like a lot of us forgot how to just trust our own eyes and call it finished.

Totally get what miaprice means about it being a shaky way to live. Saw a coworker basically redo a whole email three times just waiting for someone to say it looked okay. It's like we're all stuck in this loop of needing a thumbs up for every little thing, even making coffee. Can't just taste it and say yeah, that's coffee. Gotta have someone else confirm it. Feels like a weird habit we all picked up and forgot to drop.
