Rant: the paint shop tour in Bakersfield had a color match board from 1987 that changed how I mix
Went down to a small refinish supply spot in Bakersfield last Friday just to grab tape, and the owner let me poke around the back where they mix. Dude has this huge board hanging on the wall, 40 years of sprayout cards taped in rows, each one labeled by year and paint code. What got me was a 1987 section where the same factory code looks totally different across three cards, and he said that's because the plant switched suppliers mid-year. So he keeps those old cards to dial in a blend when a car came off a weird batch. I've been matching off my camera and the jobber computer this whole time and never thought to ask about old sprayouts. He also said heat and sun in the valley fades metallics way faster, so he shades a touch darker than the code on anything over 10 years old. Going back next month to take pics of a few rows for my own wall. Does anyone else keep a physical card file, or am I late to the party here?
