TIL a lot of shops in my area are still using the old 2K clearcoat system and calling it better than the new waterborne stuff. My PPG rep showed me the VOC numbers and I switched 2 years ago.

Check the actual film build on a panel. Old 2K can lay down thicker in one coat, which some guys mistake for being tougher. Waterborne needs more thin layers to get there, but it cures harder.

Oh that's a great point about film build! So when you say waterborne cures harder, are we talking about the final cured film after all the layers? Because if it's a thinner coat each time, does that affect how it stands up to chips and scratches compared to a single thicker coat of solvent?

Yeah I used to think thicker coats meant tougher finish, but finleym37 is right about the cure hardness changing the game.
