Unpopular opinion: hand sanding a quarter panel beats the DA every time for me
A guy who has been spraying for 30 years came by the bay last week and watched me run a DA over a fender, and he said I was just polishing the sand scratches instead of cutting them. He pulled out a block and some 320 and did a 6 inch section by hand to show me what he meant, and the difference under the guide coat was night and day. I have been doing it his way on the last two jobs and my primer lays down flatter now, even if my shoulder hates me by Friday. He learned it back when they were shooting lacquer in the 80s, so maybe some of that old stuff still holds up. Has anyone else gone back to blocking by hand on panels they used to buzz with a DA?

That 320 block trick is the real deal, I had a guy named Reggie show me the same thing about ten years back and I fought him on it at first because my arms were already shot from framing all week. Once I started blocking my cut panels by hand before primer, my trash rate on nibs dropped way down and my guide coat stopped lying to me. Old lacquer guys knew what they were doing, the DA just hides scratches until the sun hits it.
