Finally got a stubborn oil filter off with a trick from a 70s manual
Had a Ford truck filter that was totally stuck, even with a strap wrench. Found an old Chilton's guide that said to drive a screwdriver through it and use that for leverage. Worked in two minutes flat. Anyone else have a go-to method for seized filters?

Ugh, that's the worst advice ever. Puncturing the filter is a messy hack that can leave metal shavings in your oil system. A proper oil filter socket or a heavy duty band wrench is the only right way. You're just creating more problems and potentially wrecking the engine.

Tried the screwdriver trick once when my filter was totally stuck (it was a real mess, honestly). Ended up buying the right tool and never looked back.

Look, sometimes you're in a tight spot with no tools and a filter that won't budge. I've done the screwdriver trick more than once on old beaters and never had metal shavings ruin an engine. It's a last resort, not a first choice, but calling it engine-wrecking feels a bit extreme. What do you do when the band wrench just slips and strips the filter can?
