Talked to an old diesel guy who made me question everything about diagnostic shortcuts
Met a retired fleet mechanic named Frank at a parts counter in Phoenix last Thursday. He said I was wasting time guessing sensors when I should just listen to the engine for 5 minutes before plugging in the scanner. Hit me different because he showed me two jobs where he fixed a no-start just by checking ground connections first... something I never even consider anymore. Anyone else rely too much on the computer and forget the basics?

Bet Frank’s never had a check engine light he couldn’t fix with a wire brush.

Duct tape and a wire brush, that's the whole toolkit for those old farm trucks. Frank probably has a whole system where he just brushes the rust off the check engine light itself every few months, figures if he can't see it, it's not a problem. Toss in a few zip ties for what he calls "structural confidence" and you're good for another couple seasons. My uncle had a pickup like that, bed was half plywood floorboards and the other half was just hope and prayers holding the tailgate on. He used to say the check engine light was just the truck's way of saying "good morning" so he'd just wire brush the dust off and call it a day.

Can't be cheap to keep duct tape in business when you're driving a brick of rust with wheels.
