I thought the whole 'petrified wood' thing at roadside stands was a total tourist trap.

Ever stood at the base of a dam? You see them on TV and they look like a big wall. Then you're there and the noise and the spray and the fact that it's holding back a whole lake just hits you. It's not a picture anymore, it's a force.

I thought using a rasp on a hot shoe was just for show

Actually, the heat does matter a lot, not just the rasp grab. Sean48 is right that it works on dry feet, but warming that shoe just a bit makes the metal more willing to move. It lets the clinch sort of flow into the hoof wall instead of just being forced. A cold rasp on a cold, hard shoe can sometimes just skim over the top. That quick warm-up changes the whole game, especially on those rock-hard feet.

Vent: I just baked my 500th loaf of sourdough and the number hit me

Hard disagree on that one. A perfect loaf shows you actually UNDERSTOOD the process. Five hundred messy tries just means you practiced being wrong. You need that one perfect result to know what the goal even looks like. Otherwise you're just guessing. Quality of practice matters way more than blind repetition.

I set up my desk facing a blank wall for two years because I thought it was 'professional'

My last office had me staring at a beige wall for eight months straight. I started naming the paint chips, like "Dusty Blob" and "Sad Toast." When I finally got a window spot, it felt like getting out of jail. I bet @jennybailey knows the exact feeling, that first day you realize you can watch a cloud instead of a door. Productivity went way up just from having something real to rest my eyes on between tasks.

Finally gave up on the generic flux and switched to the good stuff

Yeah, I was totally in the "it's all the same stuff" camp for the longest time. Tried some on a crusty old C64 board last month though, and it just worked without any fuss. Kinda changed my whole view on it, honestly.
