That time an astro-photographer told me to ditch my DSLR for a dedicated camera

He kept pushing a ZWO ASI and said my old Canon would never capture nebula detail, and I fought him on it for months. Finally borrowed one from a club member and yeah, the difference in Ha data is night and day. Anyone else stubbornly stick with gear way longer than you should have?

You mentioned the difference in Ha data being night and day, and I get why people say that, but honestly I think it's overblown for most of us. A dedicated camera is great if you have the money and the patience for a whole new workflow, but your old Canon can still pull in some beautiful widefield shots if you know how to process them right. I've seen people blow money on a ZWO only to realize they hate dealing with a computer in the field and miss the simplicity of their DSLR. Plus, that Canon is perfectly fine for daytime use and maybe even some lunar shots, so it's not like it's useless just because it can't grab every faint wisp of nebula gas like a cooled astro cam can. Sometimes stubbornness is just being practical with what you already own, you know?

That “stubbornness is just being practical” line hits home. People chase the newest gear thinking it'll fix everything, but half the time they're just trading one set of hassles for another.

@the_faith nailed it - stubbornness and practicality are basically the same hobby sometimes. I clung to my old DSLR so long I could probably teach a master class in mediocre nebula shots. Borrowing a friend's cooled camera was like taking off foggy glasses for the first time, but now I have a fancy paperweight that can't even take a decent family photo.
