Trail fork north of Glacier Lake: went left on the steep scramble instead of the flat river walk

Figured I'd save a mile and a half by taking the ridge route, ended up crawling on my hands and knees over loose shale for 45 minutes while a marmot watched me struggle. Has anyone else taken a shortcut that turned into a total disaster?

Did that marmot at least give you a thumbs up for the effort? I swear those little guys are the ultimate trail judges, judging every wrong turn we make.

Shortcuts are how you find the real good views though.
