Digging a pond by hand in July was a mistake I'd almost recommend

I spent last weekend hand digging a 6x4 foot pond in my backyard because I thought a mini excavator rental was overkill. Three hours in, I hit a solid layer of clay that turned every shovel full into a workout. By the end I was blistered and sweating through my shirt, but the pond actually held water perfectly on the first fill. Has anyone else done the manual route and found the slow pace made them catch drainage problems early?
