Found out a 10x10 patch of lawn drinks about 62 gallons a week in July and I had been guessing wrong for years
So I was poking around the county extension site after my grass went brown in patches back in July, and their guide said a healthy lawn needs about 1 to 1.5 inches of water a week, which works out to roughly 62 gallons for every 100 square feet. I never did the math before, I just stood out there with the hose until it felt like enough, which was probably way less on some spots and way too much on others. I got one of those little tuna can rain gauges and set out four of them across the yard, and the difference between the sunny side and the shady side was nuts, like half an inch versus almost an inch from the same sprinkler run. Your mileage may vary depending on your soil, mine is heavy clay so it runs off before it soaks in, and I had to do two short soaks instead of one long one. Two weeks of that and the brown patches started filling back in, no fertilizer or anything fancy. I also quit watering in the evening because the extension folks said morning is better to cut down on fungus, and I have not seen the slimy spots since. Curious if anyone else has measured with cans, and how many gallons your yard turns out to need?
