Met an older guy at the community garden who had the wildest tomato setup

He showed me these 5-gallon buckets with holes drilled in the sides and said he grows 8 plants per bucket instead of 1... told me he hasn't bought store tomatoes in 12 years. Anyone else seen weird container tricks that actually work better than the normal way?

The bucket setup sounds like some kind of tomato sorcery (and I mean that as a compliment). My neighbor tried something similar with old laundry baskets and zip ties, but he ended up with a jungle of vines that took over his whole porch. Honestly, at this point I'm starting to think the secret to good tomatoes is just being a little unhinged about it (in the best way possible). Either that or he's got some dirt that's been blessed by a gardening wizard. Let us know if you try it - I'm half tempted to drill holes in my recycling bin and see what happens, but I'm pretty sure my HOA would have a fit.

A recycling bin with holes?? Your HOA would lose their minds but honestly that's kind of genius level unhinged right there. I bet the plastic would get super hot though and cook the roots if you're not careful. Your neighbor sounds like the kinda guy who plants something and it just takes over the whole block lol.

Totally with you on the unhinged tomato theory. I tried growing peppers in a busted cooler once.
