My neighbor in Tucson kept calling my new fence a privacy wall, and I finally asked why at 7am
I put up a 6 foot cedar fence along my side yard last month and my neighbor Dale watched the whole build from his patio, coffee in hand. When I was done he walked over and said "nice privacy wall" about four times, which bugged me until I asked him point blank why he kept saying wall instead of fence. Turns out his old man built fences in the 70s and drilled it into him that anything over 5 feet counts as a wall, so now I want to know if anyone else grew up with weird backyard rules like that.
That would bug me too, honestly, because a fence is a fence and nobody calls it a wall unless they want to start something. But then he tells you about his dad and it all makes sense, and now you can't even be mad at the guy. My grandpa was a carpenter and he had this thing where anything you built that touched the ground had to be called a "structure" no matter how small it was, so I grew up thinking a birdhouse on a post was a structure. Weird rules like that stick with you forever and you don't even question them until somebody looks at you funny. Dale was probably just standing there thinking he was giving you a normal compliment the whole time. Kind of sweet when you think about it, he was passing down his dad's thing without even knowing it.
