Put $200 into a backyard rain catchment system and it paid for itself in 3 months during the dry spell
That tank hooked up to my downspout saved my tomato plants through a 6 week drought and my water bill dropped by $45 a month, has anyone else tried making their own setup?

Remember the tank also fills with roof dirt and bird poop, so filter it before watering plants.

Saw a piece in a gardening magazine about putting a mesh screen and a first flush diverter on the downspout. That little cup that catches the first dirty water makes a big difference. Kept my lettuce going last summer after two straight weeks of nothing but sun, and the filter kept the leaves from getting that gritty taste. It is worth the extra few bucks to keep the tank water clean for the plants you actually eat.
