Unpopular opinion: I stopped rototilling my garden beds 2 springs ago and I'm not going back
Used to till every April until a guy at the Lincoln swap meet told me I was just chopping up weed seeds and wrecking my soil. Now I just lay 3 inches of compost on top and let the worms do the work, and my tomatoes did better last summer than any year I tilled. Anyone else made the switch, or do you still swear by the tiller?
Did you ever notice how this same thing pops up everywhere once you start looking? Doctors stopped giving everyone antibiotics for every little cold, bosses realized open offices just make everyone miserable, teachers quit piling on homework because more work is not the same as more learning. It is like we spent decades doing stuff just because it seemed busy and productive, then finally looked at the results and went huh, that was a waste. Your tiller story fits right in. The machine made you feel like you were getting something done, but the soil was already doing the real work without you tearing it up. Same deal with those big leaf blowers, all that noise just to move what the worms would haul away for free.
