I finally got that sourdough starter to cooperate after 3 tries

My neighbor Linda came over last Saturday and saw my sad flat loaf, then just quietly said 'your water's too chlorinated' and left me a jar of her filtered water. Has anyone else had a random tip from a stranger totally change their bake?

Wonder if your tap water has fluoride too - that stuff can mess with fermentation in ways nobody talks about, killed my first three starters before I switched to store-bought distilled.

Wait, does everybody's tap water really have fluoride or is that just some places?

All due respect to @patricia_hill60 but I think blaming fluoride for killing a starter is a bit much. People have been making sourdough with tap water for centuries before we got fancy about it. Your neighbor was probably right about the chlorine though, that's more of a modern issue. Let it sit out overnight or boil it quick and you're fine. Might be overcomplicating things by going straight to distilled water.
