Just read that in 1950, the average home baker used nearly 40% more sugar in a standard cake recipe than we do now. Found it in my great-aunt's handwritten cookbook from Cleveland.

Guess that explains my sweet tooth?

Funny you should mention that. My grandfather used to keep a bowl of hard candies on his desk, and I swear that's why I always crave something sweet after lunch. It's a powerful memory link. Makes you wonder what other habits we pick up without even realizing.

Honestly, that memory link @the_andrew mentioned is huge. Makes you wonder if the actual taste of sugar changed too, like maybe older sugar was less refined so you needed more to get the same hit. My grandma's pie crust recipe calls for a crazy amount of salt for the same reason, I bet.
