A 19-year-old's take on beard lineups made me pause
Last Saturday a kid I've been cutting for about a year told me I rush the beard edge work, said his last barber in Austin spent 10 extra minutes just mapping the jaw with a straight razor. At first I felt defensive, but watching him explain the fade into the beard made me realize I've been treating the beard and the skin fade as two separate jobs instead of one connected shape. Has anyone else had a young client point out a blind spot in their process, and did you actually adjust your routine because of it?
Changed my whole setup after a 20 year old called me out last spring. He said my beard work looked like a sticker slapped on a fade, and he was right. Now I map the jaw line first with a straight razor before I even touch the clippers, then blend the sideburn down into that shape instead of cutting them like two different haircuts. Takes me an extra 8 minutes but the finish looks like one piece. I was set in my ways for years and figured young guys just wanted everything fast. Turns out he saw something I stopped seeing.
