PSA: the straight razor shave I got in Reno in 2002 cost $12 and came with a hot towel and a shoulder rub
Went back to that same shop on Virginia Street a couple weeks ago and the guy charged me $45 for a shave that lasted maybe 8 minutes with no towel and barely any talk. I get that rent and supplies went up, but it feels like the chair time got shorter while the price tripled, and the old guys who used to hold court in there are all gone. Is this just what shaves cost now, or did I wander into the wrong kind of shop?
Remember when you could walk into a barbershop and nobody was in a rush? My uncle used to take me to this place in Fresno back in the 90s and the guy would spend a solid 30 minutes on a shave, then another 15 just shooting the breeze about boxing. Last time I went back it was a nail salon. Sounds like your Reno spot turned into one of those quick turn and burn shops where you're just a number on a screen.
