Paid $350 for a contract template from a lawyer, and it saved me $4,200 on a logo job
I do design work out of my apartment in Boise and for 3 years I just wrote "50% upfront, rest on delivery" in an email and hoped for the best. Back in March a guy wanted a full brand package and stalled on the deposit, so I finally paid a lawyer $350 for a real contract template with a kill fee clause built in. Two weeks ago a different customer tried to walk away after I sent the first round of concepts, and that clause got me $4,200 for work already done instead of nothing. Without that paper I would have been arguing over Venmo screenshots like an idiot. If you are still doing handshake deals, get a template before you need it, not after. What does your contract say about work that is already started when they bail?
Get the kill fee clause, period. A signed deal that stalls after work starts should still pay you for the hours you already burned (that is the whole point of the paper). Skip it and you are just hoping people are nice, which is not a plan.
