Question about quoting a flat rate vs. hourly for a 6 month job
A guy in Denver offered me a 6 month contract at $45 an hour or a flat $38k for the whole thing, and I picked the flat rate because I hated tracking every minute. Three months in I'm doing way more revision rounds than I guessed and I'm basically working for $22 an hour now. Did I mess up by going flat, or is the steady check worth eating the loss?
The "steady check" part isn't really true though, you already know the total is locked at 38k no matter how many hours you put in. So it's not steady in the sense of covering extra work, it just feels steady because it shows up the same each month. Flat rate only works when you can guess the scope pretty well, and revision rounds are exactly the thing that kills it.
