The invoice line item that made a client stop negotiating instantly

Last Tuesday in Cleveland, I added a separate line for 'revision #4' on a contract and the client paid the full $850 without a single word. Turns out itemizing the cost of their last-minute changes does more than any speech about my time. Have you ever shown a client their own scope creep on paper and watched them shut up?

Started doing this two years ago when a client kept moving the goalposts on a logo redesign. Added a line that said "additional concepts beyond the agreed 3, billed at $75 each" and suddenly the fourth and fifth versions came in with actual feedback instead of "try something different." The kicker was when they tried to negotiate the final invoice and I just pointed to the line that had their own email thread attached as a note. They stopped pushing real quick. People will haggle over a flat fee forever but they hate seeing their own indecision cost them money.

Wish I'd learned that one before giving away six free logo versions.
