Picked up a cheap offset smoker on craigslist and learned why everyone says to seal the gaps
Went to austin last spring to visit family and scored an old OK Joe for 50 bucks, but couldnt hold temps for more than 15 minutes. Picked up some $8 lavalock gasket from academy and now it purrs like a dream at 250 for hours.

Did you try the old "crank it up and hope for the best" method before getting the gasket? Kinda like driving a car with no doors and wondering why it's drafty.

Did you read that thread where a guy used high-temp caulk instead and said it worked just as good?

Honestly that "crank it up and hope" thing sounds like a good way to melt something important. But yeah I saw that caulk post. Not sure I'd trust a tube of bathroom sealant to handle exhaust temps, but if it held up for him then maybe it's not as big of a deal as people make it. These old engines aren't exactly precision machines anyway.
