Found a 25 minute hard-stop rule that saved my afternoons
I kept losing entire afternoons to rabbit holes, like fixing a font issue that somehow ate 3 hours. Last Tuesday I set a kitchen timer for 25 minutes on any single task, and when it rings, I stop and write down where I left off. It sounds dumb simple, but having that external beep broke the trance, I ended up finishing a proposal by 4 PM instead of 9. The big win was realizing most of my burnout came from feeling like I never got to stop, not from the work itself. Now I do this for emails and code tweaks too, and my stress level dropped way down. Has anyone else tried a time-box trick that works for their worst rabbit hole habit?

That "external beep broke the trance" line hit me hard because that's exactly what my problem was too. I'd get so deep into something that I'd forget time even existed, and suddenly it's dark outside. The timer trick works for me but I have to use my phone alarm cause a kitchen timer just makes me laugh for some reason. What really helped was writing down the next step before I even start the timer, so when it goes off I know exactly what to jot down. It's wild how much mental weight comes off when you know stopping is actually allowed. Good on you for figuring this out.
