Am I the only one who almost missed a cracked steerer tube because the bike was so clean?
I was at Cycle Works on Grand in Denver last week, checking in a 2019 carbon road bike for a tuneup. The thing was spotless, like showroom clean, so I almost skipped the frame inspection and went straight to the drivetrain. Something made me flip it over anyway, and right under the top headset cup there was a hairline crack in the steerer. The owner said he'd wrecked it in a parking garage 8 months ago and just wiped it down. How often do you guys pull forks on clean bikes, or do you trust the wipe down?
Clean means nothing for frame checks, pull the fork every single time. Dirt hides cracks but so does wax and polish, the shine just makes you lazy about looking. That parking garage story is exactly why, dude knew it was wrecked and a wipe down made it look fine to everyone after. Takes two extra minutes to drop the fork and it can save someone from eating pavement at 30mph. If a bike comes in with any crash history at all, that fork is coming off no matter how pretty it looks.
