How exactly does that work? You'd need to clamp the pedal body in the vise without crushing it, then crank on the wrench stuck through the cage. Seems like a good way to mangle the whole crank arm if it slips. I've had better luck just hammering a torx bit into the stripped hex to get a bite.

Hammering a torx bit into it sounds way too risky, you could totally split the crank arm open. I've seen that happen before and it was a total mess. Clamping the pedal seems like it would just crush the bearings and leave you with a different problem. Maybe it's just me but both of those ideas sound like a fast track to buying new parts.

Sometimes you gotta risk it for the biscuit. A split crank is cheaper than a whole new setup.

That trick can work if you clamp the wrench, not the pedal. You lock the wrench in the vise and use the crank arm as your lever. Just gotta make sure everything is lined up straight so you don't strip it further.
