I spotted a cracked frame on a routine tune-up yesterday.

Cracks grow quickly and can cause the frame to snap.

Frame snaps are rare if you take care of your bike. Was the frame old or damaged before the ride? Most descents don't end in disaster like that. Sounds like user error or poor maintenance to me. These stories get exaggerated all the time. Honestly, it's probably not as serious as people make it out to be.
