PSA: I spent 4 years greasing cassette threads and fighting creaks for nothing
Last Tuesday I had a bike on the stand at the shop in Boise for a creak that showed up under hard pedaling, and I chased it for 45 minutes. Pulled the cassette, cleaned everything, slathered grease on the lockring threads like I always do, and the noise was still there. My coworker walked over, grabbed the wheel, and showed me the freehub body was dry as a bone where the cassette sits. The grease on the threads does nothing for the actual contact points, it's the splines and the back of the last cog that need a thin film. I felt pretty dumb standing there with a grease rag in each hand. Now I hit the splines every time and that creak hasn't come back once. How many of you learned the hard way that the lockring threads are not where creaks grow?
