Talked to a new shop kid about wheel building and it got me thinking
Some kid came into the shop last saturday asking if we still build wheels by hand. Said he watched a video where a dude used a tensiometer and figured that was old school. I pulled out my old truing stand from the 90s and showed him how I lace a rear wheel in about 45 minutes without any fancy tools. He asked why I dont just order prebuilt ones online, and honestly I couldnt give him a clean answer at first. Then I told him about the 200 bucks a custom set costs versus the 60 dollar factory option, but its not really about the money. Its about knowing every spoke tension by feel and catching a bad rim before it becomes a headache. Has anyone else had a younger mechanic question the old methods and make you defend your process? What do you tell them that actually sticks?
