My cousin insisted I skip the first two episodes of that new sci-fi show

She said they were slow and the real story starts on episode three, so I jumped ahead. Now I'm totally lost on the main character's backstory and why the ship is even out there. Anyone else get bad advice that ruined a show for them?

Oh man, that's the worst kind of advice. My own terrible memory once convinced me I'd already seen the first season of a show, so I started on season two. Spent three episodes thinking the amnesiac main character was just a really weird writing choice. Felt like a total genius when I figured it out. Some setups you just can't skip.

That "really weird writing choice" feeling happens everywhere... people skip the setup in life and then wonder why nothing makes sense. They jump into the middle of a project or a conversation and get totally lost. It's like trying to build the roof before you've got the walls up.

My friend told me to skip the intro cutscenes in a video game once. Just threw me into the action with no idea who the factions were or what my goal was. Spent hours shooting the wrong guys and failing missions. Never took his advice again.
