Apprentice tip from the coal forge era I still swear by
Banking your fire at the end of the day saves a bunch of fuel and lets you start fresh faster.

It totally does with modern forges too.

Does that actually work with modern forges?

The refractory lining in most modern forges can't handle that kind of thermal shock. It causes micro-fractures that ruin the insulation over time.

Man that reminds me of my old pottery kiln. Thing would crack if you looked at it wrong after a fast cool down. Had to baby it for like a full day just to unload a mug. Makes sense forges would have the same kinda fussy problems with their linings.
