Appreciation post: The fight over legacy games at our Friday game group

Half the crew loves the long story and dedication, but the other half can't stand ruining games for good. How do you all settle this in your own spots?

Heard a podcast suggest doing legacy campaigns on alternating weeks with one-shot games. Could that keep both sides happy? What's your group's usual vibe for trying new stuff?

That idea about alternating legacy campaigns with one-shots totally hits on something bigger. I see it everywhere, where people get stuck choosing between a deep commitment and trying new things. My group tends to crash hard on one long campaign until we burn out, which is probably the worst way. Maybe mixing it up weekly is the key to keeping that fresh feeling without losing the ongoing story. Does your group have one planner who pushes for new games or is it more shared?

We actually tried that after @laurag64's burn out comment, but our schedules blew it up.

Alternating weeks sounds good on paper, but it can really mess with the flow of a story. You lose that thread of what happened last time, especially if a session ends on a cliffhanger. Laura's point about burnout is real, but maybe the fix is shorter story arcs instead of a total break. My group found that planning a campaign to last only ten sessions keeps things tight and leaves room for a palate cleanser after. It feels less like a huge commitment that way.
