The kid in the corner who broke down how scoring works in 7 Wonders changed how I play forever

I was at a game night about three months ago at a local shop in Austin, and this quiet high school kid asked if he could join our 7 Wonders table. Nobody thought much of it until he started explaining why I was losing 10 points every round just from bad card order. He showed me how to count military scoring by the third age and even pointed out my neighbor was setting up a science win. I usually just play for fun, but watching him break down the math like it was nothing made me realize I barely knew the rules. Has anyone else had a random person at the table completely change how you look at a game you thought you knew?

Honestly, @michael_williams that "commit early" advice works but you gotta watch your neighbors. I've seen someone push science too hard and get their key cards hatedrafted every turn. The trick is to switch strategies halfway through if you see two people fighting for green cards.

Read a board game forum thread about how science in 7 Wonders is basically unbeatable if you commit early.

My last game I went all in on science round 1 with the 3 that give you a free resource and had 4 green by end of age 1. Age 2 came and my left neighbor started passing me every single green card he drew, but my right neighbor was building blue and brown so I had no competition. I ended with 6 green and 2 grey for the free science symbol but still lost to my right neighbor who got 3 guilds and the 8 point wonder because I ignored military completely. Everyone talks about hate drafting but nobody mentions how much you gotta balance the military score, one loss per age against the wrong person and you're giving up 18 points just from their side.
