Just realized I've hung over 10,000 sheets of drywall in my career

I was cleaning out my truck yesterday and found an old notebook where I used to tally each sheet. Did the math and it came out to just over 10k. That's a whole lot of lifting, cutting, and screwing. It hit me how much muscle memory I've built up from doing the same moves for 15 years. My back definitely knows the number too. Anyone else ever stop and figure out their lifetime sheet count?

PSA: I swore by my old torque wrench until a job in Dallas last week

I was doing a wheel change on a King Air in Dallas, using my trusty click-type torque wrench I've had for years. I torqued the first axle nut and got the click, but something felt off, like the handle gave a little too easy. I stopped, grabbed the shop's digital Snap-on unit to double-check, and it read 20 foot-pounds under spec. The old wrench was just worn out. I finished the job with the digital tool and sent the wrench out for calibration the next day. Anyone else have a favorite tool that quietly failed on them?

A client in Boise said my built-in bookcase looked like it grew there

I was installing a floor to ceiling unit in a 1920s craftsman, and the homeowner just stood there for a minute after I finished. She said, 'It looks like it grew there, not like you built it.' That was the best review I've ever gotten. What's the nicest thing a customer has ever said about your work?

Heads up about the new co-living space on 5th Street

I had to pick between a standard coworking membership downtown and a new co-living setup that promised a built-in community. I went with the co-living spot because the website showed a shared office and weekly meetups. After moving in, the internet cut out for three days straight and the 'community manager' was never around. It cost me a full project deadline. Just read about the Denisova Cave timeline and it's not what I expected

I always thought the Denisovans were a short lived group, but a paper in Nature this week shows they lived in that Siberian cave for over 200,000 years. That's way longer than modern humans have been around as a species. It means they survived multiple ice ages in that one spot, which changes how I see their adaptability. Most coverage makes them seem like a brief footnote, but this data paints a different picture. Has anyone else seen recent studies that shift the timeline for an ancient group like this?

Chose a 6-hour layover in Lisbon over a direct flight to save $200

I was booking a trip to Morocco and the direct flight was $650. The option with a long stop in Portugal was only $450. I packed a small bag with a sandwich and spent the layover walking from the airport to Belem Tower, which took about 25 minutes. It was a nice break from sitting on planes and I got to see a bit of a new city. Has anyone else planned a long layover on purpose to explore somewhere new?

Pro tip: check the subfloor moisture before you start, even on a remodel

I was doing a glue down LVP job in a Denver condo last month and the homeowner swore the concrete was dry. My meter read 4.5%, which is way too high. He argued with me for twenty minutes, saying the last guy just went over it. I held firm and made him run a dehumidifier for three days. Anyone else run into clients who fight you on basic prep?

Got called out on my hoistway door gap checks last year

Tbh, an inspector in Cincinnati watched me do a quick check with my fingers and said, 'You know that's not repeatable, right? You need a gauge.' He was right. I bought a basic feeler gauge set the next day. Now I log the exact measurement for every door, not just a 'feels fine'. Has anyone else had a simple tool change make their work way more solid?

Unpopular opinion: I was wrong about the cheap clipper guards

For years I bought the $5 plastic guards because I figured a guard is a guard. A client in my chair last month had a fresh cut from another shop that was full of uneven lines. I checked his hair with my Wahl metal guards and found the cheap ones he'd been cut with were flexing, causing the blade to skip. I tossed all my plastic ones that day. Has anyone else seen this happen with the budget guard sets?

My smart lock decided to reboot itself while I was locked out with my groceries

Last Tuesday in Phoenix, I was coming back from the store with two bags of food when the keypad just went blank and the lock made this weird clicking sound. I had to call the landlord to let me in while my ice cream melted on the porch. Has anyone else had a smart home gadget totally fail at the worst possible time?
